Junior High Academic Camp

4 Star Camps Junior High Academic Camp Participant

Designed for students entering 7th-9th grades, the Junior High Academic Camp program focuses on summer enrichment classes to jump start the transition from junior high to high school (see below for list of classes). These formative years are crucial in preparing for the rigors of academics in the coming high school years. In order to encourage success, the coursework is challenging yet presented in an exciting manner by experienced educators, whose passion for their craft shines through igniting an enthusiasm for learning.

The academic camp at 4 Star Camps is particularly strong. Our instructors are experienced educators, professionals in their given subject area or graduate students all chosen to teach based on their knowledge and proven interaction with students.

Highlights

  • You create your own experience. Choose classes from a variety of stimulating offerings.
  • Afternoons continue with your choice of summer camp activities to include: recreational sports; tennis camp, golf, soccer or basketball camp, fitness program or fine arts workshops (click here for more information).
  • Class sizes remain small. This allows for greater personal assistance from teachers.
  • Private tutoring is also available for a fee.

Each includes the above mentioned highlights. Our 1-week intensive Mini Camp or our traditional Full Session which is available in 2 or 4 week blocks.



Mini Camp

Available as a 1-week session either June 27 - July 2 or August 1 - 6. Choose 1 of the 3 subject areas below to focus on while at camp. You'll receive 3 hours of intensive coursework in that area on a daily basis in the morning. This is a great opportunity for you to really delve into a topic that interests you. Your afternoons will be a little more relaxed with your choice of participation in sports (competitive or recreational) or fine arts classes. These special mini camps are only offered twice this summer so sign up early!

Mini Camp Subject Offerings

Structural Engineering

Learn how concepts such as balancing the forces of weight and the strength of materials, stability, tension, and compression influence a structure's strength and size. This is a very hands-on course designed to challenge your conceptual thinking.

Writers Forum

An opportunity to bring out your creative side. Transform your ideas into beautiful short stories, poetry, plays and more!

Fashion Design

Examine and select textiles and fabric, integrate color and pattern as well as study fashion history in the U.S. and Europe. By week's end you will have the beginnings of a fashion portfolio.

Full Session

A 2 or 4-week camp in which you take the same 3 classes each day. Choose your 3 from the list below, 1 class from each instructional period. Your mornings are spent in these classes with your afternoon options encompassing sports or fine arts.

Instructional Period 1

Creative Writing

Explore the fundamentals of writing imaginatively. Each day create characters, plots and dialogue in small group writing workshops and lecture presentations. Work in your choice of poetry, fiction, drama or essay through the creative process. By class end, you will have completed a short story, novel chapter, or a series of poems.

Essay Writing

Is your writing unfocused and disorganized? This class will teach you how to write essays and other forms of non-fiction from prewriting through publishing with special focus on organization. Improve your writing based on audience, purpose, limiting topics and clarifying arguments. Also included is a review of grammar, syntax and mechanics of writing.

Honors Algebra 1

Emphasis is placed on developing skills in working with algebraic expressions. Properties of the real number system, exponents, linear equations, and inequalities with one and two variables, factoring, graphing, applications and introduction to quadratics will be previewed. Represent real-world situations using equations and linear inequalities. Graphing calculators are required.

Introduction to French

Bienvenue! In this short course immerse yourself in the culture and language of France. You will learn basic vocabulary and letter pronunciation through a variety of speaking and listening activities. The material will be centered around interests such as current events, sports, music, movies, and food.

Introduction to Spanish

Hola! In this short course immerse yourself in the culture and language of Spain. You will learn basic vocabulary and letter pronunciation through a variety of speaking and listening activities. The material will be centered around interests such as current events, sports, music, movies, and food.

Instructional Period 2

Effective Reading Skills

This course is designed to aid in reading non-fiction text. Increase your understanding of what you read using proven reading strategies that can be utilized in classroom reading. Note taking, new word recognition and vocabulary development are also covered in this course.

Honors Geometry

You will investigate basic polygon attributes, coordinate geometry, logic, inductive and deductive reasoning, writing proofs, and 3-dimensional figures. Apply geometry properties to solve real-life problems. Graphing calculator is necessary for the course.

Model Congress

Introduce a bill into committee and attempt to convince your classmates as to why it deserves to be made a law. Once the proposal passes through committee, it still needs to get approval by the House, Senate and finally, Presidential signature before it becomes a law. This means learning how to compromise and verbally persuade to craft the best possible legislation.

Public Speaking

Often singled out as the #1 fear of adults, this class will help ease your concerns when speaking in front of a group. Skills related to research, organization, expression, voice control, body language and exposition will be developed to augment your self-confidence and decrease those butterflies.

Instructional Period 3

Astronomy

Have you ever wondered what is out there in space? Join in this class and explore the universe. Compare the Milky Way galaxy to other galaxies, learn the properties of the planets, sun, moon, asteroids, meteors and comets, including their surface temperatures, forms, & compositions, and recognize stellar configurations.

Business Entrepreneurship

If you have ever thought about becoming the next Bill Gates, then this is your class. You will use the components of product design, advertising, company and product naming, and business plans to construct your own unique business.

Journalism

Develop an eye for finding those key stories, learn how to conduct interviews, document sources, write by-lines, and research and take notes. The class also discusses ethics in journalism while you cooperatively generate a product that engages the audience.
