OWNERS/EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS – PATRICK AND PATTI KEARNS
Patrick and Patti Kearns are the owners and executive directors of 4 Star Camps. They have lived in Charlottesville, Virginia for seventeen years and have two daughters, Lauren (15) and Hannah (14), as well as two dogs, Molly and Bodo. The Kearns family lives at the camp all summer and works year round to make 4 Star Camps the ultimate summer experience for middle-school and high-school age kids from all around the world.
Patrick grew up in Michigan, graduated in the first Professional Tennis Management class at Ferris State University in 1986, and has been a US Professional Tennis Association member since 1989. He has been working with kid’s programs for over thirty years, and has won numerous awards for his work with the USPTA and USTA promoting junior tennis programs. This past year Patrick had the opportunity to coach the Covenant School Boys’ Varsity high school tennis team to their sixth state championship. At the end of the season, Patrick was awarded the Virginia High School “Coach of the Year”.
Patti grew up in Vancouver, Canada and went to the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing. Along with being the “Camp Mom”, she is an oncology nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital. When camp is not in session, the Kearns family enjoys skiing, travelling, camping, cooking, and (of course) playing tennis.
ACADEMIC ADVISOR – JIM MAXWELL
Jim Maxwell is Managing Partner of Hawley Martin Advertising, in Richmond, Virginia. Jim worked for more than ten years under the tutelage of world-renowned branding guru and co-founder both of The Martin Agency and of Hawley Martin, the late David Martin. Jim is a graduate of the Jepson Leadership School of the University of Richmond and of U.Va. Law School. When he is not conducting branding research or developing strategy, he is an adjunct professor of advertising, entrepreneurship, and business planning at the University of Richmond. He teaches similar courses for other universities, including UVA and George Mason, and regularly speaks to economic development organizations. He is the co-author with Steve of THE MARTIN MANAGEMENT METHOD.
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ACADEMICS – AUSTIN HETRICK
Austin comes to 4 Star Camps by way of the University of Virginia, where he is pursuing his doctorate at the school’s prestigious English literature department. In addition to his research in modernist literature, at UVA, Hetrick leads classrooms of undergraduate students, bringing passions for writing excellence and literature together with a steady attention to individual student needs. This upcoming semester, he is co-chair of an academic conference sponsored by the literature department at UVA. Hetrick divides his class time between the university and the wider community: as a volunteer at the Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville, he also tutors ESL students each week.
Hetrick obtained a bachelor’s degree in English Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he graduated with honors while simultaneously pursuing a career in advertising and public relations. Prior to applying to graduate school, Hetrick spent three years with a Madison-based marketing firm, where he worked with clients in the tourism industry.
DIRECTOR OF TENNIS – PATRICK KEARNS
Our Executive Director Patrick Kearns leads the 4 Star Camps tennis programs in which he brings over 30 years of teaching experience to 4 Star Camps tennis program. Patrick has the experience needed to bring your child to the next level whether they are just beginning or looking to play at the high school or collegiate level.
PGA PROFESSIONAL AND GOLF DIRECTOR – SCOTT EZELL
Scott Ezell has been helping golfers improve their games for over 22 years. A collegiate and tour golfer, Scott Ezell moved to Virginia in 1994 and has served both as the University of Virginia’s Assistant Golf Coach and Birdwood’s Director of Instruction. His expertise and genuine love of working with kids is one of the most outstanding highlights of our golf camp.
DIRECTOR OF TENNIS – TROY PORCO
Troy is the Associate Head Coach for the University of Virginia Women’s Tennis Team.
In 2014-15, the Cavaliers captured their second consecutive ACC Championship and made their fifth straight NCAA Round of 16 appearances.
In recent years Porco has also been the coach of the women’s USTA Summer Collegiate Team. The squad, comprised of recent All-Americans, is an elite training program for top American collegiate players. Porco led the group as they competed in USTA Pro Circuit events.
Prior to arriving at Virginia, Porco was the head coach at Auburn from 1998 to 2005 and led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament in 2002. That season, he was honored as the SEC Coach of the Year and the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year. His team’s at Auburn were traditionally one of the best academically at the school as he coached 34 Academic All-SEC selections. While at Auburn, Porco coached 14 nationally-ranked players, 25 regionally-ranked players and one ITA South Region Rookie of the Year.
Porco was an accomplished player prior to his coaching career. He was twice named Most Valuable Player while playing collegiate tennis at Florida International while serving as team captain his senior season. Prior to Florida International, he was consistently ranked among the top-25 juniors in Florida.
He has also traveled the women’s professional circuit with Mary Jo Fernandez (ranked as high as No. 4 in the world) as her hitting partner.
Porco is married to the former Chrissy Harris. The two were married in 1993 and have two children, Caroline (20) and Connor (18). They reside in Charlottesville.
