OWNERS/EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS – PATRICK AND PATTI KEARNS
Patrick and Patti Kearns are the owners and executive directors of 4 Star Camps. They have lived in Charlottesville, Virginia since 1995 and have two daughters, Lauren (19) and Hannah (17), as well as two dogs, Molly and Bodo.
The Kearns family lives at the camp all summer and works year round to make 4 Star Camps the ultimate summer experience for middle-school and high-school age kids from all around the world.
Patrick grew up in Michigan, graduated in the first Professional Tennis Management class at Ferris State University in 1986, and has been a US Professional Tennis Association member since 1989. He has been working with kid’s programs for over thirty years, and has won numerous awards for his work with the USPTA and USTA promoting junior tennis programs. Patrick had the opportunity to coach the Covenant School Boys’ Varsity high school tennis team to their sixth state championship. At the end of the season, Patrick was awarded the Virginia High School “Coach of the Year”. Patrick also works with the Men’s and Women’s UVa Teams in which he is the Racquet Services Coordinator for both of the teams. Patrick also serves as the Director of Instruction for the University of Virginia.

Patti grew up in Vancouver, Canada and went to the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing. Along with being the “Camp Mom”, she is an oncology nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital. When camp is not in session, the Kearns family enjoys skiing, travelling, camping, cooking, and (of course) playing tennis.
ACADEMIC ADVISOR – JIM MAXWELL
Jim Maxwell is Managing Partner of Hawley Martin Advertising, in Richmond, Virginia. Jim worked for more than ten years under the tutelage of world-renowned branding guru and co-founder both of The Martin Agency and of Hawley Martin, the late David Martin. Jim is a graduate of the Jepson Leadership School of the University of Richmond and of U.Va. Law School. When he is not conducting branding research or developing strategy, he is an adjunct professor of advertising, entrepreneurship, and business planning at the University of Richmond. He teaches similar courses for other universities, including UVA and George Mason, and regularly speaks to economic development organizations. He is the co-author with Steve of THE MARTIN MANAGEMENT METHOD.
DIRECTOR OF TENNIS – PATRICK KEARNS
Our Executive Director Patrick Kearns leads the 4 Star Camps tennis programs in which he brings over 30 years of teaching experience to 4 Star Camps tennis program. Patrick has the experience needed to bring your child to the next level whether they are just beginning or looking to play at the high school or collegiate level.
PGA PROFESSIONAL AND GOLF DIRECTOR – SCOTT EZELL
Scott Ezell has been helping golfers improve their games for over 22 years. A collegiate and tour golfer, Scott Ezell moved to Virginia in 1994 and has served both as the University of Virginia’s Assistant Golf Coach and Birdwood’s Director of Instruction. His expertise and genuine love of working with kids is one of the most outstanding highlights of our golf camp.
TEST PREP COORDINATOR / OPERATIONS DIRECTOR – NICOLE – COBER-LAKE
Nicole has a Master’s Degree in Literature from the University of Virginia, where she designed and taught courses in literature and composition for 10 years. While conducting original research in the fields of twentieth-century poetry and gender theory, Nicole also worked as a mentor and liaison to undergraduate students at the UVa Women’s Center. After graduation, she moved with her family to beautiful Nelson County, VA, where she works as a private tutor for SAT and ACT prep, writing, literature, and history. As a homeschooling mother of five children, Nicole is actively involved in curriculum research and development and in establishing a local educational cooperative, and she enjoys working with students of all ages.
As an undergraduate, Nicole attended Vassar College, where she served as editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Helicon, then graduated with honors. Her literary and editorial backgrounds landed her in New York, where she worked in the publishing industry before pursuing her passions for literature and teaching in graduate school.
